The Struggle Must Come Before the Snuggle

“Relationship-Based, Reward-Based”

My name is Jake and I offer private dog training as well as dog training classes in the South Metro, MN.  I use “Relationship Based” training methods.  New behaviors are shaped with positive reinforcement, strengthened with negative reinforcement, and unwanted behaviors are addressed with an approach that centers on what’s best for both you and your dog.  Every owner will have different needs, and there is no one-size-fits-all all approach to dog training.  Relationship based training focuses on clear communication, and mutually beneficial positive reinforcement wherever possible.  I strive to understand and meet the needs of the dogs, and the owners alike.  You will have expectations from your dog, and your dog will have expectations from you.  You will need to work together as a team, but you will be the team captain and coach.  Changing the dynamics of the relationship into one in which the dog happily follows you as the team leader is the main goal of my training.  In order to achieve that goal, you must be able to understand what your dog is telling you, and you must be able to lead the dog towards success in every aspect.  Communication is a 2-way street, and it’s the heart of my dog training philosophy.  You should be able to tell the dog yes and no in a way that they understand, and you must know why a behavior is happening before you can know what to do about it.  Your dog will tell you why if you are able to listen.

There is a lot of controversy in the dog training community right now over the use training tools like e-collars, prong collars, and head halters.  My opinion on the use of these tools isn’t nearly as important as yours.  You are in charge of your education.  I will tell you what your options are, but it is ultimately up to you to decide what’s best for you and your dog.  If used properly, these tools can be the difference between success and failure, and in my opinion, should not be ruled out.  They all have their place in a trainers tool box, but the tool is only as effective as the person using it.

How My Dog Training Works

I’ll work with you to set realistic goals and develop a training plan that fits your needs and lifestyle. As your personal dog trainer, I’ll teach effective methods for reinforcing the right behaviors and stopping unwanted behaviors.  Training is done at your house or an agreed upon location.  Our first session will be a consultation and an introduction to basic training and handling, and usually lasts a little longer than an hour.  Future sessions are catered to your specific needs and usually last an hour or less.

About River Valley D.O.G.S.

River Valley D.O.G.S. gives private dog training right in the comfort of your own home (or virtually, if you’d prefer). You and your pup will get one-on-one obedience training that’s guaranteed to strengthen your relationship and make your family happy. I am there to train the humans more than the dog. If your behaviors dont change, neither will your dogs. You must learn to become someone worth following if you expect to see results. Be patient, it’s a process, but the rewards are great. There will be growing pains, but nothing worth doing is easy. Embrace the struggle, the reward is the snuggle… and the snuggle is REAL.
